Astani CEE PhD Student Advisement
The Astani CEE Student Affair’s mission is to support the holistic development of students and foster academic success.
This page contains advisement information and policy reminders for current Astani CEE PhD students. If you have additional questions, please reach out to your advisor on the AdviseUSC platform. For instructions, please see Advisement.
The USC Catalogue is a “document of authority” or contact with the student and university. Meaning the information provided in the catalogue is primary to other documents, including the page, published by departments.
To support the transition to graduate studies, additional resources are available to new Astani students below.
PhD students are required to maintain continuous enrollment by enrolling in a minimum of six units in the fall and spring semesters.
- A PhD student is considered to be enrolled full-time (F/T) when registered for a minimum of 6 units.
- Exception: Ph.D. students registered in CE/ENE 794: dissertation 2 unit course during the fall and/or spring semester are considered full-time enrolled.
- International students are advised to review OIS' Maintaining Visa Status page.
- Summer enrollment is optional, but if a PhD is on campus during the summer, they will enroll in GRSC 802 to maintain access to the UPC student health center.
This is not a comprehensive list of requirements. All students should refer to the USC Catalogue for official policies and requirements.
Registration, D-Clearance and Pre-Req Waivers
- Students register for their courses through an online tool called Web Registration. For more support on registration, please visit the Registrar's website.
- Courses offered every semester are viewable on the Schedule of Classes.
- Every semester, there is a deadline to register for classes and settle your bill without accruing a late fee. Please be enrolled full-time before this deadline. You can change your schedule after this date but to avoid late fees you must enroll and settle your bill by the posted deadline.
- For more information about deadlines, please visit the Academic Calendar.
D-Clearance and Pre-Req Waiver Requests
Sometimes courses require approval before you are able to register for the course. To learn more about these two processes please review the links below:
Directed Research Policy and D-Clearance
A CEE Ph.D. student may apply the following Directed Research (CE/ENE 590 or 790) units toward their degree requirements:
- With a prior non-USC master’s degree: up to 6 units
- Without a prior non-USC master’s degree: up to 12 units
An additional 6 units of Directed Research may be applied—bringing the total to 12 units (with a prior master’s) or 18 units (without a prior master’s)—if approved by the student’s faculty advisor and the Director of CEE Graduate Programs.
Account Holds
Holds may be placed on your account by a variety of offices at the University. Some of these holds may prevent your ability to register for courses. It is your responsibility to review holds on your account each semester prior to registration.
You can check if you have a hold on your record via myusc.usc.edu → OASIS → RESTRICTIONS.
Common holds are listed in the button below, but this is not a comprehensive list of holds. If you have a hold on your account that is not displayed below, please read the details in OASIS and contact the relevant office.
Screening Exam
The Screening Exam evaluates the student’s capabilities to think independently and critically. The Screening Exam is divided into a written portion and an oral portion and is administered during the spring semester. It is typically taken during the first or second year of the PhD Program.

Qualifying Exam
The examination qualifying a student for candidacy for the PhD degree is designed to test the student’s fitness to undertake independent research. It is comprehensive in nature and includes both written and oral parts.
Prior to taking the qualifying examination, the student must have met all of the university’s and program’s requirements for the PhD degree, except the dissertation and successful qualifying exam. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on all USC course work available for graduate credit and the approval of his or her qualifying exam committee to proceed to the exam.

Dissertation Completion & Defense
A dissertation is an original contribution to current knowledge in the field and a demonstration that the PhD candidate has achieved sufficient mastery in the field to pursue independent research and scholarship. A dissertation represents the individual candidate’s research and writing.
The student is expected to be enrolled in 794 Doctoral Dissertation each semester, except summer sessions, after admission to candidacy until all degree requirements are completed. Registration for 794 for the two semesters (excluding summer sessions) immediately following admission to candidacy is the minimum requirement entitling the candidate to dissertation supervision by the dissertation committee.

The Astani Student Affairs Team supports the holistic development of students and fosters academic success.
PhD Students are expected to coordinate with their faculty advisor to determine which courses they should take each semester. Please regularly check your email for communication from Astani Student Affairs (cee.advise@usc.edu). PhDs should regularly check their STARS report and track the progress of their degree and should schedule appointments with their assigned academic/department advisor to review and discuss their progress in the program (including their progress toward preparing for the screening exam, the qualifying exam, and dissertation).
If you opt to meet over Zoom you must have your camera on (we like to see your face!).
