Rebuilding A Better Los Angeles

In a wildfire-prone Southern California, we tackle natural disaster resilience.

We Are #ResilientLA

Just seven days into 2025, Southern California battled raging wildfires in the aftermath of devastating windstorms. Hurricane force winds measuring up to 100 mph ripped a swath of destruction through the Los Angeles area, causing sparks to fly and ignite dry vegetation into raging infernos. The LA wildfires grew exponentially larger by the hour, causing large scale evacuations from threatened areas and communities. By the end, over 57,000 acres were burned, an area roughly equivalent to 2,200 Alcatraz Islands or 500 Disneylands, or larger than Washington, D.C., according to Cal Fire. As we look back at this tragedy, our USC CEE faculty reflect on their personal experiences, lessons learned from this disaster, and how we can work together to improve disaster resilience in our beautiful City of Angels.

Students Tackle Wildfire Resilience

Our innovative course, "CE486: Innovation in Engineering and Design for Global Challenges," is designed to equip the next generation of engineers to tackle global-scale challenges, from COVID-19 to mass forced migration, regional conflicts and environmental disasters. Witnessing the recent natural disaster of the LA Fires and its aftermath, this spring's course focuses upon the global challenge of wildfires and how to improve disaster resilience in Southern California, a region that is notoriously prone to devastating wildfires.

Building A More Resilient City of Angels

“November, December, now January − there’s no fire season, it’s fire year. It’s year-round.” - Governor Gavin Newsom

As Angelenos brace for “fire years” rather than “fire seasons,” viable solutions for the future of wildfire resilience in Southern California are needed. Facing the uncertainties of droughts, wildfires, blackouts, poor air quality, mudslides and flooding, our faculty share their thoughts for rebuilding our communities with natural disaster resilience in mind.
