Course Registration

D-Clearance stands for department clearance and it is requested for courses at the university designated in the Schedule of Classes with a “D” at the end of the section number. You may directly register for classes with sections that end in “R” if you meet all pre-requisite and co-requisite requirements. DEN students should request for D-clearance for DEN sections via D2L. For on-campus students interested in DEN sections, please enroll in the on-campus section, if available. Once enrolled, please ask the professor to share the link to the DEN section. On-campus students who wish to take a course offered exclusively on DEN may submit a petition here. Approval is not guaranteed. Please stay enrolled in the on-campus section until notification of approval.

A pre-requisite is a course that is required to be completed prior. To request for a pre-requisite waiver, please fill out the D-Clearance and Pre-Requisite Waiver Request on myViterbi.

A co-requisite is a course that must be taken at the same time. To request for a co-requisite waiver, please fill out the D-Clearance and Pre-Requisite Waiver Request on myViterbi.

Some courses are restricted to upperclassmen or a specific school. Other courses are also restricted to students with an active graduate post. If you believe you are eligible for a course, please email Astani Student Services at ceepdept@usc.edu for assistance.

For undergraduate students, a cumulative grade point average of C (2.0) is required for all courses taken at USC as well as all courses taken within the Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Please review your STARS report for specific courses that require a C (2.0) or better and all other requirements.

Graduate students are required to maintain a grade point average of B (3.0) to graduate. If a grade lower than a C is earned in a course, the course will not be used for your major GPA but it will be factored into your overall GPA.

OASIS is a student information system that includes grade reports, a registered course list, financial aid reports and other important information. It can be access directly from myUSC.

New students need to enter their 10-digit ID number and password (this is already pre-set as your birthday (MM/DD/YY)).

Undergraduates may take coursework outside of USC in the summer for credit. Please discuss any interest during mandatory advisement or reach out to the Astani Student Services team at ceedept@usc.edu before proceeding with summer courses. Courses require pre-approval through a form on the Transfer Credit Services page.

Master's students may transfer a total of 4 units from another university with an advisor's approval, as long as the courses were completed before enrolling at USC. To initiate a Graduate Transfer Credit Review  visit the Degree Progress Page.  If Degree Progress determines you have transferable coursework, please contact Astani Student Services (ceedept@usc.edu) if credit may be applied to toward you degree.

Follow the steps outlined below if interested in taking Directed Research CE 490 (Undergraduate students), CE 590 (Masters students) or CE 790 (Ph.D. students).

STEP 1 — Students get verbal approval from faculty for a directed research course.

STEP 2 — Students fill out the Directed Research form, found at: myViterbi.

STEP 3 — Faculty are automatically sent an email directing them to the admin site where they can log in and approve or deny students requests as well as view all previous semesters.

STEP 4 — Students receive a confirmation email that their course has been approved or denied by the faculty member.

STEP 5 — Students receive an email when d-clearance has been provided.

STEP 6 — Student registers for the course via web registration.

ALL students wishing to be part time enrolled should reach out to the Astani Student Services at ceedept@usc.edu. PhD Students: This will impact your funding. Therefore, all requests for a Reduced Course Load (RCL) must email Andy Chen for an appointment to discuss funding status on RCL.

Domestic students are not required to enroll fulltime but doing so may impact financial aid eligibility. Students should contact USC Financial Aid  to discuss.

International students must be full time enrolled during fall and spring semesters. Summer registration is not required. For master students, a reduced course load (RCL) maybe be requested under special circumstances. Please see them below: - Academic Difficulty (first semester) - Final Semester (remaining coursework does not reach full time enrollment) For more information about RCLs, please visit the OIS Website. Note: Viterbi has a separate RCL request form. Do NOT use the OIS application process.

WARNING: Do not drop any classes before speaking with the Astani Student Services team - even if you have received approval for your RCL.

It is not recommended to take two courses that have time conflicts. Please speak with an advisor before proceeding.

Undergraduate students may take up to 24 total units Pass/No Pass. Units beyond 24 units will not count toward graduation requirements. (An exception was made during the pandemic to allow students up to 32 units.) Only one GE course may be taken Pass/No Pass and no WRIT courses may be taken Pass/No Pass. Undergraduates must receive a C- or better in a course in order to receive a final graded of Pass. For additional information, visit Pass/No Pass FAQs.

Graduate students are traditionally not allowed to take courses Pass/No Pass and have them count toward their graduation requirements. An exception was made during the pandemic. Students must earn the equivalent of B or better in the course to receive a final grade of Pass.
