Student Organizations

There are a variety of Student organizations that you can join. This is an integral part of your CEE experience. Student clubs are a gateway to career opportunities, growing your network, exploring new fields and making lasting memories while at USC Viterbi.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), USC Student Chapter

Weekly meetings, field trips, guest speakers, Habitat for Humanity volunteers, study groups, parties, and informal gatherings are all part of ASCE. The chapter is very active each year in the ASCE Conference which is an intercollegiate competition where the students design, build, and race in a concrete canoe; construct and test a 20-foot-long steel bridge. Other competitions at the conference include technical papers and presentations, quiz bowl, impromptu design, popsicle bridge, etc.

Construction Management Association of America (CMAA)/ Associated General Contractors (AGC), USC Student Chapter

USC CMAA/AGC competes in the annual ASC Region 6&7 Construction Competition of western universities, which is a simulation of real job conditions, including estimating, scheduling and project management. Every spring we cosponsor a symposium on campus in which 240 individuals from industry present on novel projects or ideals within the industry. We have monthly meetings, hold professional and social events, participate in community service projects, info sessions, tailgates, field trips, and guest speakers. We are a great organization to learn the tools of the industry, expand your industry network, get internship/job opportunities, and create new friendships.

Earthquake Engineering Research Institute/Structural Engineers of SoCal (EERI-SEAOSC)

USC EERI-SEAOSC competes in the annual Seismic Design Competition (SDC), which challenges students to structurally and architecturally design an earthquake-resistant skyscraper. Beyond predicting the structural performance in a seismic event and rendering a facade design, we also build a physical scale model out of balsa wood. In the spring, we travel to a city in North America and test our skyscraper on a shake table to put it to the test! In addition to competing in SDC, EERI-SEAOSC hosts company information sessions with professionals in the structural, architecture, and construction fields, teaches industry software, and encourages student engagement in earthquake engineering education.
