About the competition

The USC Viterbi Sonny Astani Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, together with industry partners, launches The Das Family Innovate x LA CEE Student Competition.

The focus: Our city, Los Angeles.

The mission: Innovate engineering and technological solutions to the most pressing challenges facing  Los Angeles.

The toolkit: Engineering design, data analytics, systems thinking, user research, discovery of new materials, entrepreneurship and story.

The Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), with the support of the Das Family, has launched a one-of-a-kind inaugural student competition: Innovate LA for the chance to win the grand prize of $15,000!! The department held a competition kickoff event with a special guest speaker, and the final Pitch Day in mid April 2023.

Throughout the 6 session, students will meet at monthly seminars where they will receive support on how to progress their idea until the official pitch day as well as hear from panelists from startup founders showcasing their pitch decks. Upon these meetings, feedback on monthly submissions of a portion of the pitch deck, and guidance for how to refine the pitch

The competition is meant to serve as guidance for how to launch a startup and how to have a compelling pitch for your idea. The competition is led by our Competition Director who provides the participating students with series of “Masterclasses” for the "0 to 1 Founder Journey”.

Who can apply?

Teams will be led by CEE students but students from a variety of disciplines at USC are strongly encouraged to apply. We are looking for big, bold ideas that can be implemented to make Los Angeles a more sustainable, more prosperous, more equitable, a more joyful and healthier city for all peoples to live in for generations to come.

For the best concept that addresses one of the five focus areas.

All participants will attend workshops, masterclasses and will receive mentorship from faculty and industry mentors throughout the competition.

A part of the goal is to create a learning opportunity for students and encourage them to address Los Angeles’ biggest challenges that could be solved by innovations in civil and environmental engineering. Students will develop innovative engineering ideas to mitigate one of the five challenges with a focus on Southern California/Los Angeles:

1. Disaster Resilience
2. Environmental stewardship
3) Urban livability
4) Extreme habitats
5) Transportation service systems.
