| On February 23, 2013, the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Southern California Section held its third annual collegial Traffic Bowl competition at Cal State Fullerton. Nearly 50 engineering and planning students from six local universities participated and competed in this event. In addition, several transportation practitioners and faculty advisors were in attendance. The USC team was led by Sam Levy (senior civil engineering student of the Viterbi School of Engineering) with Han Yu (Jenny) Chan and Yiming Chen (both are 2nd year in the Sol Price School of Public Policy). Daniel Huang, the current ITE/USC chapter president served as an alternative. The Jeopardy-style competition covered a broad range of topics related to transportation planning, design and operations. After beating Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine during the first round, the USC team advanced to the final round and faced Cal Poly Pomona who had beat out Cal State Fullerton and UCLA. The USC team was only one question away from surpassing the Cal Poly team before entering the final Jeopardy. The USC team had to wage all in the final Jeopardy for a chance of winning. Both teams didn’t the right answer. Team Cal Poly maintained the lead and won the competition. Team USC settled for second place. Aside from the friendly competition, students networked across campuses and gotten new knowledge about the profession. Event photos can be found here: http://smu.gs/15FD2AX. Though a network of 80 local and regional chapters and more than 140 student chapters, ITE provides on-going opportunities for information exchange, participation and networking. The ITE/USC Chapter was established in 2012 by a group of enthusiastic engineering and planning students. All students who are interested in field trips and access to transportation job opportunities are encouraged to join ITE/USC. Contact Professor Eric Shen (ericshen@usc.edu) for additional details. |
