The Haagen-Smit Prize, first launched in 2001, is given out annually to two outstanding papers published in Atmospheric Environment and covering different science areas. The following two papers are the winners of the AE 2011 Haagen-Smit Prize:
Calvert, J. and S. Lindberg, Mechanisms of mercury removal by O3 and OH in the atmosphere, Atmospheric Environment, 39, 3355-3367, 2005.
Zhu, Y.F., W.C. Hinds, S. Kim, S. Shen, and C. Sioutas, Study of ultrafine particles near a major highway with heavy-duty diesel traffic, Atmospheric Environment, 36, 4323-4335, 2002.
Dr. Sioutas’ paper is on freeway exposures that have been used by State and Federal legislation for the placement of high schools at distances from roadways that will reduce the risk of children to deleterious pollutants.
